Existing Records Not Always Coming Up in Filter Search

Several users have been reporting a phenomenon over the past few weeks/months:
A user begins typing letters of a record name in the filter box in an effort to locate a particular record. Under normal circumstances, if the record already exists, then it will appear among the filter results based on the algorithms of the search.
Sometimes the existing record does not appear, allowing the user to think that it does not exist in the database. However, if the user searches again a few minutes later, it does come up.
I personally have not been able to witness the problem so it is hard to give you any more details or data. Nevertheless, perhaps you have suggestions for (a) what might be the issue that these users are facing and (b) what might solve the problem.
Assuming the user entered the letters properly (which could be a false assumption but as of yet I have not way to document it), I was thinking it maybe has to do with the speed with which they type or some kind of delay between a user's computer and the server.
Any thoughts?
