Automatic Updates

Post by miplatt »

The automatic updates seem to be working properly on most of our computers.

However, when we receive the message that Clay needs to update on the newest computers with Windows 7, after clicking to update nothing happens.

Are there known issues with automatic updating with Windows 7?

Other ideas as to why it is not working?

Updates work perfectly on Windows 7. Check:
-That the Web Update Service is running (in Windows Services)
-That a firewall isn't blocking port 80 for windows services

You can also check the auto-update log at: c:\windows\system32\WebUpdateSvc4.log and see if there is anything unusual there (assuming the service is running and you check the timestamp)

Web update service appears as "stopped" in windows services.

When we try to start it, it says access denied.

How can we get around this?

Perhaps it's a Windows User permission issue? Or you can try to reinstall Digital-Clay on that machine.

After reinstalling, the same behavior continues and the web update service still appears as stopped. The users have full control of the computer.

Any other ideas to try?

Is there anything recent in the log file mentioned above? Or how about the Windows Event Log - any helpful entries when you try to start the service?

You get the "Access denied" error when you try to start the service from the Windows Services control panel, correct? Not when Clay is actually trying to run an update. It sounds like a configuration problem at the level of Windows, though I am not sure what it could be.

Perhaps it is a group policy issue? See for example: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256299

If the above doesn't help, then perhaps I can get tips from the Web Update support. Please add any details you can think of to the description of the problem.

We have now gotten the Web Update Service to run.

Is there any way to test if the automatic update will work in advance of the next actual automatic update? Otherwise, we will wait and hope for the best.

Now I am curious...what was the solution?

The only way to test is if you happen to have a previous install version lying around. I.e. install an old version and connect to ClayCentral and the auto-update will kick in.

Quite simple.

Under Manage in My Computer, we went to services and enabled the service to work manually. Then we were able to activate the service within the task manager.

We may test, but otherwise we will wait until the next update and let you know what happens.

The recent automatic update was successful! I guess that was the problem.

Thanks.
