Common Instance

Post by miplatt »

Within table Entity is a tab called Communication Log (set up as a custom table). It is used to add instances of communication with the entity such as a phone conversation or trade show.

Is there are way to create an instance (such as a particular trade show) for all of the entities for which that is relevant? (sort of like attaching an attachment to each entity that is then somehow connected to all of the others)

For example, we met 20 companies at a recent trade show. We would want to have record of the fact that we met them there.

I know that there is a way to change a common field in each entity; however, I do not recall if it is possible to create links from each of the relevant entities to a particular communication event.

Or perhaps there are better ways to accomplish this (if you understand what I mean).

You didn't specify how the Entity and the Communication Log is connected.

Is it a single Communication Log for the trade show and the same instance is linked to multiple Entities? In which case you would add a many-to-many field in the Communication Log table and simply add all the entities from within the Communication Log instance using the many-to-many field.

Or is it one Communication Log per entity per trade show? In this case you would have to create 20 records if you intend to add 20 entities for that trade show. You can do this easily using the "Menus for Item Creation" feature in 9.0 - you would then select the entities in a list, right-click and select the menu item and it would automatically create one record per entity.

There are other variations, but if the above two scenarios don't cover it, you'll need to give me more info.
