Adding the orginal picture file to a record
When I add a picture to a record it asks if to add the original file as attachment. Are there any special reasons why I would also need the original file? Or would this just be a waste of memory

The original picture is always resized to a smaller 'thumbnail' size before it is saved in the database. If you want to be able to see the original picture in full size and detail, then you need to answer yes to this question.
