Auto Update Problem

Post by miplatt »

A user received the message to auto update on a laptop.

The auto update process began smoothly and closed Clay. Somehow before installing the new/changed one, it stopped and did not complete the process. As a result, when the user clicks on the claystation icon, the error message "Unexpected Error; quitting" pops up.

At this point, Digital Clay no longer appears in the folders of Program Files or Program Files x86 such that it seems that the exe file has disappeared.

We then installed Clay again manually. After installing successfully and trying to connect, the auto update message came up. Upon initiating the auto update process, the same phenomenon happened again such that the installed exe is no where to be found.

Any ideas why this happened and how to solve this problem?

The laptop is running windows 8.1, 64-bit

The only time I've seen such behaviour is if the user gets impatient and starts a clay process before the auto-update has finished. But there may have been another unexpected error during the update. In any case, a manual install should fix the problem. The problem with your manual install, I'm guessing, is that you probably downloaded 9.1.x which is now the default download instead of 9.0.x.

Thanks.

Per your instruction, we tried manually installing 9.0.X. The installation seemingly went smoothly but when Clay reopened and we tried to connect we receive the message again "Unexpected Error; Quitting".

Then tried installing 9.1.x manually just in case. The installation was fine. Then, when tried to connect, it asked to autoupdate. At the end of the autoupdate process we tried to connect and yet again received the message "Unexpected Error; Quitting".

It seems that the two versions are located in 2 different locations and both are producing that error. (C:\Program Files (x86)\Digital-Clay\Clients vs. C:\Users\User1\AppData\Local\Programs\Digital-Clay\Clients)

any additional thoughts or things to check?

Are you running ClayOutlook or ClayStation with an offline database? If so, perhaps it updated the database and now it can't downgrade.

Another possibility is that it didn't manage to unregister the newer versions of the components for 9.1.x, because of the downgrade and multiple installs.

See if there is anything useful in the log files in C:\digitalclay\ under the folder for the specific client you are using.

Try running an uninstall, and then an install.

I uninstalled all of them and reinstalled 9.1.x. Then it asked to autoupdate. And it autoupdated successfully and now works ok.

Thanks!
