Multilingual/Internationalization Issues

Clients:

• As of version 9.1.0 all Digital-Clay clients support Unicode fully and support multiple concurrent languages.

Databases:

• MDB databases use Unicode by default and have no special requirements for non-English languages.

• When creating a new SQL Server database for Digital-Clay, the correct Collation setting must be set to match the language. If the Collation is not set properly, the data may appear as question marks.

Date & Time:

• Dates are displayed in one of three formats (which is automatically detected using the Windows Regional Options): dd/mm/yyyy, mm/dd/yyyy and yyyy/mm/dd. It is currently not possible to display dates using other formats. All formats are converted to their closest equivalent from the above three choices.

• DateTime fields will use either a 12-hour clock with AM/PM, or a 24-hour clock depending on the Windows Regional Settings.

• For ClayCentral, the default settings are retrieved from the Regional Settings for the Windows 'System' user. To change settings for this user, see: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apply-regional-language-settings-reserved-accounts#1TC=windows-7

• To reduce confusion with the position of the months in date values, check “Show Month Names” in Tools/Options. Due to right-to-left issues however, this option will not work in the following situations: Either the Regional Settings is set to a country that uses right-to-left month names and Clay is using a left-to-right language, or vice-versa. Month names also do not work in Web ClayStation.

• Note that Duration fields are not Time fields and therefore do not use either 12 or 24 hour clocks. '17:00' does not mean 5 PM, it means 17 hours.

Other:

• Similar to date settings above, both decimal points and number separators in numeric/percentage/currency fields are displayed according to the Windows Regional Settings.

Old Versions:

The following is only relevant for versions up to 9.1.0:

• Web ClayStation supports Unicode and supports a different language per user.

• Digital-Clay desktop clients are multilingual but do not support Unicode. This means that each Windows user/machine can configure the interface to use a different default language, but only one non-English language can be used at a time.

• Issues with the desktop client interface language:

• The default language per user is defined by the language set in the Windows Control Panel/Regional Options/Advanced/Language for non-Unicode Programs. The default language of a Digital-Clay installation is automatically detected using this setting.

• The interface language can be overriden to use English via Clay Tools/Options. If you wish to use a different interface language other than English, the above Windows setting must match the language set in Tools/Options.

• If the current interface language does not match a non-English language used in record data, the data will appear as question marks. If a user attempts to edit records that contain unsupported languages, a warning will appear.
