Digital-Clay Hardware and Software Requirements
Digital-Clay itself requires very little if the solution involves a small user-base and database, but it can use more memory and hard disk space as usage grows. And if SQL Server is installed as the back-end database (a typical scenario), then the database has its own requirements:
- RAM: ClayCentral and all Clay clients each typically run on only 100MB of RAM on a small system, but this can grow up to 2GB with use.
- Disk-space: Minimally, 100MB of initial hard-drive space, with more space required depending on database and attachment size increase. With some systems, the size of the database may grow to take up many gigabytes.
- OS: ClayCentral and desktop Clay clients run on Windows XP and up. ClayCentral and Web Claystation server do not require Windows Server and run on any Windows edition. Clients connecting to Web ClayStation may run on any OS and almost any internet browser, including Android, Mac Safari, etc.
- Web ClayStation server-side depends on a web server and a FastCGI module which have their own requirements. For example, to run Web ClayStation on IIS with FastCGI, Windows Server 2003 and up is required. But a typical/default install uses Apache web server which runs on any Windows.
- ClayCentral can run with MDB as its back-end database for very small systems or local laptop installations, greatly lowering the system requirements. But a typical company solution requires SQL Server to be installed. See SQL Server requirements, and SQL Server Editions to decide which SQL Server you need. ClayCentral can run on the free SQL Server Express editions 2005 and up. For scalability and better performance with multiple concurrent users and heavier queries, Standard Edition is required.
- ClayStation for Outlook runs on Outlook 2003 and up. As of 9.2, ClayOutlook still requires Outlook 32bit but this will change soon.
- Performance: Note that since ClayCentral is mostly memory-bandwidth intensive, a faster FSB and RAM speed will provide greater performance boosts than faster CPUs or more memory. ClayCentral also fully utilizes multiple CPUs which can greatly help with concurrent user requests.
